Since the Patagonia R1 can be used in all seasons for any activity, the Patagonia R1 is a popular insulating piece. The Patagonia R1 is a staple in any mountain enthusiast’s outerwear collection. There are no real frills and a few minor things have changed in design over the years, such as pocket cut and thumb loops. I’ve gone through a couple of R1s over the years and they continue to do exactly what they are designed to do. I chose the Patagonia R1 because of Patagonia’s ironclad guarantee and I know it’s eco-friendly. Many companies have a fleece similar to the R1. It also doesn’t block wind at all, which is why I usually pair this with my Patagonia Simple Guide Hoody. Sometimes, but not always, I wish that it had a drawcord hem so I didn’t have to tuck it in when the weather got gnarly. Considering this and how warm it is, the Patagonia R1 Pullover offers a lot of bang for the buck.

Plus it stuffs small, if you choose to take it off. The R1’s simple design also means that it doesn’t weight much – only 333 g (11.75 oz). Patagonia doesn’t advertise this feature though. Maybe i’m lucky or maybe this thing is also stinkproof. What really amazes me is that I can wear the R1 Pullover for weeks on end during ski season or even months on end while living in a rock hut in the Andes and it does not develop an odor. I did knick my latest R1, but the fabric has not torn due to the grid pattern that acts kind of like rip-stop.

The R1 packs small and has proven to be durable. You may not notice, but the seams are also arranged to limit the annoying factor from pack straps. The pocket is designed to be accessible with a pack on. It won’t hold too much or it could be uncomfortable. A zipped left chest pocket is about the right size for a couple of Gu’s or a pocket watch.

The half zip allows you to dump a bit of heat or zip up for warmth as needed. It’s ready to move with you and do what you want to do. The R1 Pullover has an active, technical fit. It’s simplistic design is what makes this thing so perfect. It easily fits over a t-shirt or wool top, but I wouldn’t put much else underneath it due to it’s active fit. It’s warm for it’s size and it feels comfortable. There is nothing exciting about the Patagonia R1 fleece’s look. This simplistic, textured pattern has been proven to work and I find that the R1 pullover is the first layer I grab whenever I go out and often it doesn’t come off until I get home. It kind of looks like a waffle pattern against your skin. The Patagonia R1 pullover features high/low interior grid polyester fabric (Polartec® Power Dry® polyester) that traps heats and moves moisture. R1 is the most minimal of the regulator fleece line and my go to choice for mountain life. There are four grades of Regulator – R1, R2, R3, R4.

You may recognize the R with a square around it as the Patagonia Regulator logo. Patagonia’s Regulator Fleece technology offers lightweight, compressible, breathable, insulating layers that are standard apparel for adventurers around the world. The technology is the same on all of these, but they are slightly different designs and weights.

This review covers the Patagonia R1 Fleece 1/2 Zip Pullover, but the R1 also comes in a full zip jacket and a pullover hoody. It’s one of my standard pieces of outerwear. I’ve taken mine hiking, ski touring, biking, climbing, beer drinking, traveling, yard working, networking, dog walking, resort skiing, and more. Patagonia R1 FleeceĪs Patagonia’s lightest and most breathable fleece, the Patagonia R1 has proven itself for years and will continue to do so for many more. The Patagonia R1 fleece features a timeless design that’s perfect for backcountry adventures or hitting the town. It’s an excellent choice for insulation due to it’s active fit, breathability, and compressibility. The Patagonia R1 Fleece has been a standard in my layering system for years.
